The "Before": A Kitchen Floor Nightmare

When the business owner reached out to Topline Markham, their back-of-house was facing a critical operational bottleneck due to their aging quarry tile floor.

Traditional tiles are common in older Markham restaurants, but over time, they present severe health and safety challenges:

  • The Grout Line Trap: Even with heavy daily scrubbing, porous grout lines naturally absorb grease, organic fats, and moisture. Over the years, these lines turned pitch black, trapped foul odors, and became a breeding ground for bacteria—a major concern for York Region public health inspections.

  • Cracked Tiles & Trip Hazards: Heavy rolling carts and dropped stainless steel pots had cracked several tiles, leaving exposed concrete underneath that absorbed even more liquid and became a tripping hazard for the busy kitchen staff.

The Solution: Engineered with Mapei Polyurethane Cement

To solve these problems permanently, the Topline team completely stripped the kitchen floor down to the base concrete. We repaired all the deep cracks and structural imperfections to apply an ultra-heavy-duty seamless system designed to withstand the brutal environment of a high-volume commercial kitchen.

We recommended and installed the industry-leading Mapei Polyurethane Cement System (Mapefloor CPU):

  1. Precision Preparation: Diamond grinding was used to open up the concrete pores and remove deeply embedded kitchen grease, ensuring a flawless mechanical bond.

  2. Heavy-Duty Slurry Base: Application of Mapei’s premium polyurethane cement. Unlike standard epoxy, this cementitious polyurethane expands and contracts at a similar rate to the underlying concrete, completely preventing peeling or lifting under high pressure.

  3. Integrated Safety Texture: We broadcasted a uniform quartz aggregate layer directly into the slurry to create a permanent, aggressive anti-slip texture that guarantees traction even under wet and oily conditions.

  4. Top Coat Seal: Finished with a dedicated Mapefloor CPU topcoat, sealing the texture completely to create a non-porous, chemical-resistant shield.
